Ugg boots for men …heaven help us! Sienna Millar, Kate Moss, Beyonce and Sarah Jessica Parker blazed a trail with them - now Irish guys are falling in love with the discount Ugg.
Uggs boots discount – said to be an abbreviation of the word ugly –have been a ubiquitous fixture on the Irish high street for the past number of years.
We’ve all had to endure the sight of mocha skinned lovelies with blonde streaked hair, panda eyes and rugby shirts sauntering down Grafton Street in their oversized furry footwear.
But now, it seems, men are also getting in on the act, thanks to Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood who have all been spotted wearing the laid back look.
Although they may be associated with women, the boots were originally worn by men - Australian sheep-shearers, early aviators who kept their feet warm and Australian surfers in the 1970s.
Which is all well and good, I can imagine these cozy boots looking chic in sunny Los Angeles or on Bondai beach but Grafton Street? I doubt that most Irish guys will be able to carry off the trend. They do look masculine enough, but for most men this will not form part of a great new winter look.
Honestly, they’re more a fashion disaster in the making than a hot new look. For stars like David Beckham and Leonardo, wearing Ugg discount boots is fine. But the average Irish male will have to have a very casual and confident look if he is to wear them with any style. One editor of a men’s magazine, who declined to be named, told The Independent: "They are a monstrosity. They are like glorified slippers. You may as well shuffle down the street in your pajamas and a pair of incontinence pants."
Mmmm – this is one trend that I’ll certainly not be welcoming but if you want to prove me wrong please send in your pics. We could do with a laugh.
